Font Spotting

Or “You know you’re a design geek when…”

Admittedly, a favourite activity of mine is what I like to call “font spotting”. Basically, it’s trying to identify fonts that I see in my day to day life. On web pages, it’s usually pretty easy, because you can just look at the CSS to see what font is being assigned.

Out in public, it’s a bit harder, but I’ve found that there are six fonts which tend to get the most use on business signs: Fette Mittelschrift, Clarendon, Serpentine (usually Bold Extended), Microgramma, Papyrus (Sweet Krishna this one gets overused. There should be a tax to use this font.), and Impact. Movies tend to run the gamut, but rarely do they use fonts I don’t own. It’s a sort of habit where, even if I’m pretty sure of the font, I’ll even ask the person using it just to verify. It may get annoying to other people at times, but I just can’t help it. As a designer, it’s something that’s just reflexive to me.

Anyway, I’m not sure where I was going with this, but I was thinking about it and thought I’d share. So how about all you folks out there in Internet-land? What weird “games” do you like to play?

Sometimes I go to a large music store (like a Virgin mega-store), and play the “radio game” (where you try to identify the artist, track, and preferably album) with the music playing over the store’s PA.
